What Will You Get If  You Get What You Want?- II

Calls are once again going forth for unity among all believers in Christ.  That is a wonderful goal.  Most Christians I know would love to see that come about.  However, what some are wanting is not unity, but union.  It is another effort at Ecumenicalism – attempting to bring all “Christian” groups together regardless of doctrinal differences.  Is such a union really the answer?

First of all, How can we ignore doctrinal difference if they are in opposition to biblical teaching?  Second, what can we give up that scripture teaches us we must do or believe?  For instance, can we accept unbaptized people into fellowship, or not serve the Lord Supper every Sunday?  Third, or, what can we accept that scripture forbids?  Can we bring in a piano for worship services?  If so, why not a full band?  Can we accept women as elders, deacons, or preachers?  These are just some of the changes being advocated and even practiced by some who once were with us but have gone out from us.

It is still a mystery to me what these brethren hope  to achieve.  If they should succeed in accomplishing some of their stated goals, what will they have then?  If they succeed in tearing down the foundations of the church as it exist, what will be left?  We need not fear, that will not happen.  Jesus said “Upon this rock I will build MY church and the gates of hell will not prevail against it.”  (Matthew 16:18).

 Brotherly,
